Richard and Elizabeth Wood

Richard Wood (23) and Elizabeth Webber Slute (22) were married on 21 September 1851 in the registration district of Totnes, Devon [vol 9, page 622].

Richard (25) and Elizabeth (24) with their baby son Richard (b. 1852) emigrated to Australia in 1852 aboard the ship Parsee, leaving London 30 September 1852 and arriving Moreton Bay on 17 January 1853.  The voyage from Plymouth to Moreton Bay had taken 102 days and the Parsee had 493 immigrants aboard [Maitland Mercury 2 Feb 1852 p. 2].

The young family made their way to the Glengallan run [John Deuchar] on the Darling Downs where Richard was employed as a bullock driver, one of the first bullock drivers for the area.

At Glengallan, Richard and Elizabeth's daughters Mary Ann Wood was born 13 March 1854 and Elizabeth Wood was born 6 March 1856. By 1860 the family were living at Swan Creek [later known as Jack Smith's Gully] where Keturah (Kitty) Wood was born 28 May 1860.

Richard and Elizabeth's family continued to grow with the arrival of Martha Wood on 1 June 1864 following by Susan Wood on 2 January 1867. Sadly two-year-old Martha died 23 March 1867. Their youngest daughter Emily Wood was born 23 December 1868.

Richard and Elizabeth's eldest daughter, Mary Ann married Thomas Eastwell on 2 March 1871.  Their second daughter, Elizabeth married David Patterson on 28 March 1876 at Freestone Creek.

Richard and Elizabeth's eldest child and only son, Richard married Maria Jane Gillespie on 24 May 1877 at Swan Creek. 

Kitty Wood married Charles Lewis at the Wesleyan Parsonage, Warwick on 17 December 1877. Susan Wood married Jacob Jacobsen on 15 November 1882 and their youngest daughter Emily Wood married William James McClure on 11 March 1885.

1887 was a sad year for the family.  On 14 June Richard Wood jnr died, aged just 35.  He was survived by his widow Maria and nine children as Richard and Maria's youngest child, Amy Lillian Wood was born 15 September 1887, three months after Richard's death. Sadly two-year-old Amy died 4 November 1889.  Richard and Amy were laid to rest at Swan Creek cemetery.

Richard Wood snr, aged 82 died 25 September 1910 and was buried at the Swan Creek Cemetery.

Elizabeth Wood died 9 April 1926 and her gravestone recorded she died on her 100th birthday.

On 20 February 1905, John and Annie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and the photo above was published in The Queenslander 18 March 1905.

Johann Niclas (Borchers) Borchert (23) and Antije Beata Muller (25) were married on 20 February 1855 at the Lutheran Church, Burg, Dithmarshan, Prussia.
  

John (39) and Annie (35) emigrated to Australia in 1865 aboard the ship La Rochelle with their children Claus (10), John (8), Cecilia (7) and Anna (4).

[It seems Coralie (a twin to Cecilia) died before 1865 as she is not on the La Rochelle list.] La Rochelle left Hamburg on 5th August and arrived Brisbane on 19th December 1865. 

Their youngest daughter Catharina was born in 1867 in Queensland and sadly their youngest child died 6 April 1870, aged 1 day.

In 1869, John applied for and was granted 40 acres of pastoral land on the Meringandan run. John became naturalized on 19 March 1870 at Toowoomba and he signed his form "Johann Borgert".

In 1877 their daughter Cecilia Margaretha Borgert (1858-1883) married August Bleck.

In 1881 their son John Borgert (1857-1911) married Anna Augusta Wagland (1864-1903) at St Paul and Luke's Church in Toowoomba.

Sadly, Cecilia Bleck nee Borgert died in Brisbane on 2 July 1883, aged just 24. 

In 1889 their daughter Anna Magdalen Borgert (1861-1943) married Henry John Lau (1871-1930).

Their youngest daughter Catherina Borgert (1867-1954) married Carl Wilhelm Dorries in 1898 however Catherina and Carl divorced in 1925.  Catherina took in her niece Lillie Cecilia Borgert (1896-1941) after Lillie's mother died in 1903.

Annie Borgert nee Muller died 23 April 1905 and John Borgert senior died 11 May 1911 and both were buried at Meringandan Cemetery.

John and Annie were survived by 15 of their 18 grandchildren:

Children:  Son – Spencer Glynne Griffith aged about 37.  Daughter aged about 39 who is married for the second time (to a farmer) and supposed to be living at Murphy’s Creek 15 miles from Toowoomba.

History:  Entered Hon. East India Co.’s service in 1839.  On my father’s death four years later I resigned and went back to England, where I received a sum of money under my father’s will.  I lived on my means at home and at the Cape of Good Hope for some Eleven years.  First came to Australia in 1854 in the ship “Tory” in which I was wrecked on Port Stephens Heads.  I swam ashore.  Returned to England – being offered £60 for the run home.  I immediately came out again as a free emigrant in the “General Hewitt” bringing out my wife and family and we arrived in Moreton Bay in 1855.  Was employed under Mr. Grundy C E in the survey of Moreton Bay.  Afterwards variously employed Pilot Service, Diving – Wharf work and shepherding.  Six years since I took up Selection 3015 on Darling Downs.  Has £200 when I took it up.  Through the drought I lost everything.  No money or friends.

Absent on leave from 15^th Sepr to 27^th Octr 1887.

Last seen by Med. Supt 31^st Dec 1887.  Died 31^st Dec 1887.  Buried 2 Jany 1888.

James Glynne Griffith

James Glynne (Jim) Griffith married Louisa Beaurein in Cape Town, South Africa in October 1843.  Their first daughter, Catherine Ann Griffith, was born in London on 23 Apr 1845.  There were tough times when Jim didn't have a job (working on boats) and he wrote to Lord Newborough asking for assistance (these letters are in the Welsh Archives) and assistance was given.

In 1847, Jim, Louisa and young Catherine travelled to New Brunswick, North America (later Canada) where Jim had been given to believe he could find work.  Their second child and only son, Spencer Glynne Griffith, was born at St. Andrews, New Brunswick on 7 Dec 1847.  By 1850, the young family were back in London as their third (and last) child, Louisa was born 15 Sep 1850 but baby Louisa only survived for three weeks.

So we come to 1853, Jim was 32 years old, with a wife and two small children to provide for.  His parents, two sisters and three of his four brothers had passed away.  His elder (and only surviving) brother, David White Griffith, was handling his father's affairs, so Jim made a decision to travel to Australia to see what prospects he could find there.  Leaving his family in London, Jim boarded the barque Tory bound for Australia.  Alas, the barque Tory was shipwrecked off Port Stephens on the New South Wales coast.  All on board managed to swim to safety though a small boy died after hitting his head and because of this lad's death, there was a court case and one of the crew was found guilty of negligence.

However, Jim must have seen "prospects" as he went back to London, bundled up the wife and children, and headed back to Australia on the ship General Hewitt arriving at Moreton Bay in December 1854.

Jim worked on boats/ships along the Brisbane River and his wife, Louisa, and children Catherine and Spencer made the best of their new home and the family lived in and around the "Darling Downs" area near Brisbane.  Catherine married Mark Wagland in 1863 and Mark and Catherine's first child, Anna Augusta Wagland, was born in 1864.  Anna was Jim's first grandchild and she was my great great grandmother.

In September 1879, at the Monthly Land Court hearing before Mr. Commissioner Hume, James was granted 80 acres Homestead selection 3015 at Ramsay, Eton Vale, Darling Downs.  Aged 59 and with £200 capital, Jim tried to make a go of it.  However just five years later he had lost everything through the continuing drought and he just walked off his land.  Failing health, poor eyesight combined with no money and no friends led Jim to request admission to the Dunwich Benevolent Asylum on Stradbroke Island in Moreton Bay on 19 March 1886.

Jim’s amazing life, which had seen him travel from his homeland in Northern Wales, live in many places between London and Australia and receive so much assistance and encouragement from his parents, finally closed on the last day of December 1887 and he was buried on 2 January 1888 in the Dunwich Cemetery, Stradbroke Island.

Jim was 67 years old and survived by his estranged wife Louisa (62) (they had been married nigh on 44 years), daughter Catherine (40) and son Spencer (37), and 7 grandchildren - his daughter Catherine's children - Anna Augusta Wagland (23), Louisa Wagland (21), Walter Wagland (18), Alfred Wagland (16), Maurice Mark Wagland (14), John (Helbert) Wagland (11), George Frederick Haines (1), and 4 great grandchildren - John Mark Borgert (5), William Albert Borgert (4), George James Borgert (2) and Annie Catherine Borgert (7 weeks).  Sadly, it seems that no family members were present when Jim was buried.

Abraham and Catherine Lewis - From Willen to Freestone Creek

FROM WILLEN TO FREESTONE CREEK

The year was 1870 and in the small village of Willen in Buckinghamshire, England, a family was preparing for a journey that would change their lives.

The Lewis family had lived in Willen since at least 1790. The men of the family were agricultural labourers and the women probably made lace, a home industry for which the region was noted.

On Chistmas Day 1837, Abraham Lewis aged 21 and Catherine Tooth aged 20 married at Willen. Could they have envisaged that the latter part of their married life would find them thousands of miles away from the village of their birth?

Over the next thirty years the couple raised their family of two boys and five girls: William (1840), Elizabeth (1843), Emma (1845), Clara (1848), Lavinia (1849), Tryphena (1852) and Charles (1854). Two other sons died in infancy.

So we come to Autumn 1870. Abraham and Catherine were in their mid 50’s. Together with three of their children Emma, Tryphena and Charles now aged 25, 18 and 16 respectively, they said goodbye to Willen, made their way to London and boarded the SS Light Brigade which sailed for Australia on 2 October 1870. Fourteen weeks later they arrived in Brisbane as free settlers and the family made their way to Freestone Creek which was 14 km northeast of Warwick in Queensland.

In 1871 the rural community of Freestone Creek may have numbered around 20 families. The Lewis family brought with them knowledge of farming wheat, barley, oats, beans and saffron as well as rearing dairy cattle, pigs and ducks. Though the soils of the Freestone Creek - Swan Creek area were not the chalk and flint soils of Buckinghamshire, the gently rolling hills of the countryside would have seemed familiar and the family set about farming their land and raising livestock.

In 1873 Emma Lewis married George Clegg; in 1875 Tryphena Lewis married John Dean and in 1877 Charles Lewis married Keturah Wood. Abraham and Catherine spent the rest of their lives at Freestone Creek. Catherine Lewis (nee Tooth) passed away in June 1899 aged 83 and Abraham Lewis in March 1900 aged 84 and they were both buried at Swan Creek Cemetery. They were survived by five of their children. Back in Buckinghamshire were Elisabeth, Clara and Lavinia and in Queensland and New South Wales, Emma, Tryphena and Charles and at least 17 grandchildren in Australia.

In January 1996 I visited Swan Creek Cemetery but could not find any headstones to mark Abraham and Catherine’s grave, though there were a number of unmarked graves. Charles was my great, great grandfather.
